Top 10 Movies of 2011

It’s a little late, but here are my choices for the best movies of last year.  Truthfully, I didn’t get to see many movies last year and still have a few more to check out.

Need to See:

-          Killer Elite

-          The Artist

-          The Descendants

-          Mission Impossible

-          Warrior

Honourable Mentions:

-          Paul

-          The Greatest Movie Ever Sold

-          Captain America

-          Thor

-          Scream 4

-          The Muppets

#10 Conan O’Brien: Can’t Stop

This was one of the best documentaries of the year.  It looked at how Conan dealt with being bumped off the Tonight Show after a short stint then taking his comic genius on the road.  We get to see all sides of the funniest late night talk show host since Johnny Carson and I enjoyed every minute of it.

#9 Horrible Bosses

This was quite possibly the funniest movie of the year.  It is the best thing that Jason Bateman has done since Arrested Development.  Charlie Day proved that he shine on the big screen.  Jason Sudeikis also was priceless throughout the film.  Add in 4 memorable performances by Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, and the lovely Jennifer Aniston and you have one hell of a comedy.

#8 X-Men: First Class

This is the film that single-handed saved the X-Men franchise.  James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender delivered fine performance as young Professor X and Magneto.  Betty Draper and Kevin Bacon added some memorable scenes, especially Bacon who hammed it perfectly playing the baddie.  Overall, it was a great superhero movie that was on par with the original movie, but not quite as awesome as X2.

#7 Super 8

I had such high hopes for this film and it delivered right up until the last 10 minutes that were too convenient for my liking.  That being said, the film was one of the best for keeping me on the edge of my seat.  The kids were fantastic and Coach Eric Taylor was his usual brilliance.  JJ Abrams is fine director and can play with the big boys when it comes to making blockbusters, having now made Star Trek, MII 3, and now this gem.

#6 Moneyball

Baseball is not my favourite sport, but I still love any sports movie.  Moneyball is one of the best baseball flicks since The Rookie.  Brad Pitt delivered another mesmerizing performance as the real-life Billy Beane, the Oakland A’s GM.  Jonah Hill showed his acting chops and proved that he can handle serious roles.  Aaron Sorkin wrote yet another brilliant screenplay and could/should be up for Best Adapted Screenplay come Oscar time.

#5 Hugo

Marty Scorsese can do no wrong in my books.  This brilliant director can take any story and shoot it in such a way that it literally takes your breath away.  He tries his hand at a 3D movie and made the best one since Avatar.  The film was so beautiful to watch.  It was a perfect way for Marty to show off his love of restoring old movies.  The actors, including heavyweight Sir Ben Kingsley, funny man Sasha Baron Cohen, and newcomers Asa Butterfield and Chloe Grace Moretz, all deliver fine performances, especially the young Butterfield who did an amazing job carrying the film.

#4 War Horse

I didn’t think I would like this film as much as I did, but that’s Spielberg for you.  He delivered one of his best movies in a long time.  Like Scorsese, Spielberg shot a movie that was incredibly stunningly beautiful.  The story of a horse surviving all that Joey does is so powerful and will have you getting all emotional over a bloody horse.

#3 The Ides of March

Most of you faithful readers of my blog know how much I love The West Wing and anything political.  The Ides of March is one of the best political movies in years.  It was the movie where Canada’s own Ryan Gosling proved that he play with the big boys, such as George Clooney, Paul Giamitti, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.  Gosling not played with the heavy hitters, he carried the movie that had so many great actors in it.  Clooney also did a solid job behind the camera, directing an amazing political movie.

#2 50/50

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is no longer that kid from Angels in the Outfield or even the kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun.  He has established himself as one of the finest young actors out there.  His performance as Adam, a young man who finds out he has cancer and his journey through it was nothing short of brilliant.  He had great chemistry with Canada’s new favourite comedic genius, Seth Rogen, who also delivered a great performance as Adam’s best friend.  Rogen had almost all of the laughs throughout the best comedy-drama of the year.  Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard were both fantastic in their limited roles as Adam’s psychologists and girlfriend, respectively.  Overall, the film had a great mix of comedy and drama as it tackled the touchy subject  of cancer.

#1 Drive

As most of you have read in my previous review of this brilliant film, it is my generation’s Taxi Driver.  The film is also the best thing that Ryan Gosling has ever done.  The young man has matured into one of the finest things that Canada has produced since Wayne Gretzky.  His portrayal as the titular Driver is one for the books.  He barely speaks, but yet he is so intense that you can’t help but to cheer for him even when he goes a little off the deep end at times.  Carey Mulligan also delivered a mesmerizing performance as Irene, the next door neighbour and love interest of our hero.  Throw in solid outings by Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman and the lovely Christina Hendricks and you have yourself the best movie of 2011.  Sadly, the film will probably be overlooked by the Academy, but it is the clear winner in my mind.

#10 Scott Pilgrim vs. The WorldEdgar Wright is the main reason why this film was as good as it was.  Granted, it wasn’t amazing but compared to most of the other crap I saw this year, it wasn’t that bad.
#9 The Town The direction by Ben Affleck and the strong performances of the leads make this flick a step up from the standard heist film.
#8 Black SwanJust give Natalie Portman her much deserved Oscar already.  She has definitely outdone herself this time around and deserves the golden statue.
#7 The King’s SpeechColin Firth and Geoffrey Rush were both brilliant in this inspiring film directed good English lad, Mr. Hooper.
#6 The Fighter T his film lives up to the hype and was a great film thanks to the performances by Christian Bale (who will win the Best Supporting Oscar), Amy Adams, and Melissa Leo.
#5 The Social Network David Fincher delivered another great film, while Aaron Sorkin added another gem to his impressive resume.  Meanwhile, Jesse Eisenberg delivered another great performance as Facebook co-founder, Mark Zuckerberg and could surprise some people with a Best Actor win come Oscar time.
#4 True GritEvery couple of years, the Coen brother create a movie that you can’t help but to love and True Grit is their latest masterpiece.  Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin all delivered mesmerizing performances.
#3 127 HoursThis film is probably the most raw and intense movie of the year.  James Franco delivered his best performance ever to date.  The flick was Danny Boyle’s best work in years.
#2 Toy Story 3Most of you who read this blog of mine know how much I despise sequels and trilogies, but the third installment of this childhood favourite franchise is one for the books.  It is quite possibly the best third movie in a franchise ever.  It was another brilliant film from Pixar.
#1 InceptionChristopher Nolan can do no wrong in my mind and this is his latest achievement.  Meanwhile, the all star cast brought their A-games.  It was another near flawless film from Nolan.

Best Man United Players of All Time
Honourable Mentions:
David Beckham – A great footballer who scored some fantastic goals for United, but his departure was not a pleasant one.
Andy Cole – A wonderful striker, who had some great seasons with United.
Mark Hughes – “Sparky” was purely magical during his time with United.  One of the all time top goal scorers for United.
Gary Neville – One of my all time favourite players is a great right back that has great leadership qualities both on and office the pitch.
Brian Robson – Another classic United players from the 90s.
Christiano Ronaldo – I have never been fan of him, but his abilities to score goals definitely helped United during his 4 years there.
Wayne Rooney – From his hat trick in his debut to struggling now, he has been one of the best players United current have.
Ruud Van Nistelrooy – He didn’t play a whole lot for United, but he definitely scored a whole lot of goals during his short time.
Dwight Yorke – Had great chemistry with Andy Cole and scored some big goals for United during their Treble season.

10. Ole Gunnar SolskjaerHe scored the biggest goal for United ever!  It was the one that won them the 1999 European Championship and the Treble in injury time.  He also scored some clutch goals throughout his time at United.  And did a great job managing the reserves for the past couple of years.
9. Dennis Law I don’t know much about the “Lawman” since he was before my time.  But the history books say the Scotsman was brilliant and I believe the hype after watching some highlights of him.  237 goals in 404 games is enough for him to make the list.
8. Paul Scholes The red headed Englishman has been superb for United since he came through their youth system.  Only 3 players have played more than his 649 games for United.   His 150 goals are in the top 10 all time goal scorers for United as well.
7. Roy Keane Another one of my favourite players.  Keano was the complete player, who was excellent in his own 18 yard box and could score some beautiful goals.  He was a tough tackler and sometimes let his temper get the better of him.  However, he was one of the all time greats to play for the reds.
6. Peter SchmeichelHands down, one of the greatest goalie ever to play the game.  The Great Dane could do it all when it came to keeping the ball out of the United goal.  He also fancied himself a bit of a goal scorer as well.
5. Duncan Edwards United fans will forever wonder what kind of numbers could he have put up had he survived the tragic Munich crash.  Edwards was just coming into his prime years and was lighting up opponents.  He could have been right up among the all time leaders in goals for United had he not been killed.
4. Eric Cantona He is the only Frenchman that I have ever liked.  He was the definition of confidence (although he could come off as cocky).  He also was a fantastic finisher and could see the game so well.  It’s no wonder he’s a legend at Old Trafford.
3. George Best The crazy playboy could play football!  He was brilliant during his time at United.  Had he put a bit more effort into training and not spend as much time partying, he probably could have been the all time goal scoring leader for United.  However, I still watch the old highlight reels in amazement at his skills and abilities on the pitch.
2. Sir Bobby Charlton The man, the legend, the icon.  He has done everything for the team.  He’s currently the club’s president.  He is Manchester United’s all time goal scoring leader with 249 goals.  He is 2nd all time in most games played for United.   The man also led England to their only World Cup.
1. Ryan Giggs A few years ago, I wouldn’t have put him first, but he is now played the most games for United with a remarkable 845 games and counting.  He is still as effective as he was a teenager for United.  He is a complete player, who can play in both ends of the pitch.  He is also the most decorated man in English football history with 18 or so trophies (and hoping to get more this season!) The Welshman has always been a fan favourite and now he has become a legend and arguably the best Manchester United player of all time.

Top 10 Martin Scorsese Movies
When Marty finally won his much deserved Oscar a few years ago and everyone in the audience gave him a standing ovation, it was a testament to his greatness as one of the best directors of his time, which has spanned over 50 years.   There are so many great films to choose from, but here are my top 10 Martin Scorsese film.

#10 Cape Fear If anyone can remake a classic, it’s Marty.  Granted, it definitely helps when you get one of the best actors ever (Robert DeNiro) in it.
#9 No Direction Home: Bob DylanIt’s Marty making a movie about Dylan, need I say more?
#8 Mean StreetsIn my mind, this flick was Marty’s breakthrough film.  It is a brilliant film.  DeNiro and Harvey Keitel are both flawless in this great film about surviving and trying to make it in a tough neighbourhood.
#7 The Color of MoneyThis flick is one of those rare times that the sequel is just as good as the original.  The man, the legend, the icon, Mr. Paul Newman returns as Fast Eddie Felson, but he is the teacher this time around and takes a young, cocky man (played by Tom Cruise) under his wing.  Marty was sensational behind the camera and delivered yet another (yet underrated) classic.
#6 CasinoBack in the days, Marty and Bobby DeNiro were the ultimate tag team.  Marty was (and still is) one of the best directors in the business and Bobby was (and still occasionally is) one of the best actors.  Casino was the last time they made a film together and it was the proper goodbye with DeNiro and the other Marty regular (Joe Pesci) delivering excellent performances.
#5 Gangs of New YorkThe first time I watched this flick, I wasn’t that big of a fan of it.  But I watched it recently and realized its awesomeness.  Marty knows how to make great epic film.  The action sequences were flawless, while not overshadowing the characters’ stories.
#4 The DepartedMarty now has a new muse (Leonard DiCaprio) and this is their best film together so far.  However, it was not just Leo who delivered in this film.  Matt Damon was just as great and Jack Nicholson delivered one of his best performances since As Good as It Gets.  Alec Baldwin, Marky Marky, and Martin Sheen are all brilliant in the film as well.
#3 Taxi Driver Many people would have this as their number one and I don’t blame them.  This film is absolutely brilliant from start to finish.  DeNiro should have won an Oscar for his flawless performance as Travis Bickle and how Marty never won an Oscar for this film is still head scratching.
#2 Raging BullOnce again, it is amazing that Marty didn’t win an Oscar for his direction of this classic.  Rocky may have came out first, but this film is a much better film.  There’s no question about it.  I am not saying Rocky is a bad movie; I love Rocky, but if you were to compare the two, there’s no question about what movie is better.  Raging Bull is a flawless film in every sense of filmmaking.
#1 GoodfellasThis movie is one of the few movies that I have given a perfect rating for.  It is a complete achievement in moviemaking.  Marty delivered his finest film and was not awarded for it (another time to question the Academy for their stupid choices).  With the exception of the first two Godfather films, this is the best gangster film ever made.  DeNiro, Pesci, and Liotta are all flawless and at least Pesci won for Best Supporting Actor.  Every time I watch this film, it seems to get better and I wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes my number one movie of all time in the future.

A recent Joblo.com poll got me thinking about Tom Cruise’s career.  I’ve come to the conclusion that the man generally knows how to pick good flicks.  Granted, he’s gone off his rocker as a person in the past couple of years, but on screen, he’s starred in some great films.
Honourable Mentions:MagnoliaThe OutsidersRisky BusinessThe FirmEyes Wide ShutInterview with the Vampire
#10 Born on the 4th of JulyHe was rightly nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal as Ron Kovic, a veteran who was wounded in Vietnam and his dealing with life once he comes home.  Oliver Stone either makes a great film or a terrible movie.  This is one of his great films.
#9 CollateralCruise was excellent as Vincent, a cool, smooth talking, hit man, who needs Jamie Foxx to drive him to 5 different hits in one night.
#8 Minority ReportA great sci-fi flick from Steven Spielberg with Cruise delivering another solid performance.
#7 The Color of MoneyThe successful sequel of The Hustler revolves mostly around the legendary Paul Newman, but Cruise holds his own going against the legend.
#6 The Last SamuraiIt seems like this is the forgotten film of Cruise’s career, and it is probably his most underrated performance and movie.
#5 Days of ThunderCole Trickle.  That name alone is enough to make you love this movie.  Tony Scott also delivers some great moments on the race track and Cruise is fantastic as Trickle.  It is no secret, this is one of my favourites.
#4 Top GunThis is a guy’s movie, even if Tarantino thinks it’s about gay fighter pilots.  Cruise delivers another solid performance as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in yet another classic from Tony Scott.
#3 Jerry MaguireCameron Crowe is one of the few filmmakers, who can make a love story out of a sports movie.  His script is brilliant.  Add excellent performances by Cuba Gooding Jr and Cruise, and you have a great movie.
#2 A Few Good MenRob Renner’s powerful courtroom drama is filled with A-listers, who all deliver outstanding performances, but it is Cruise who carries this film.  I believe that this is Cruise’s best performance.
#1 Rain ManWhile Dustin Hoffman steals this movie and rightfully won the Oscar for his performance, Cruise holds his own and his character’s arc is incredible.  While it is not his best performance, it is easily one of his top 5 performances.  This film as a whole is a tad better than A Few Good Men.
