My beloved Sharks made the playoffs again this year, but for the first time in years they are the serious underdogs having finished 7th in the West.  They will have play a St. Louis team that has swept the season series and have the lowest goals against in the NHL.  The road to Stanley Cup will be long and hard, but I gotta believe the boys will prove people wrong this year.

Todd you better light a fire under their asses soon!  My beloved Sharks have just two wins in their last eight games. They are 1-3-1 on a road trip that has four more games left on it this week.  Phoenix, LA, Dallas and even the red-hot Ducks are mere points away from stealing the division from them.  And considering the point differential between the Wings and Canucks is now in double digits, the best the Sharks can hope for is third in the Conference.  They are in need of some serious offensive help and Niemi needs to get hot again.  All I can say is thank God for Logan Couture! Gentlemen, please wake up and play to the caliber that I know you can!

Logan Couture has been constantly climbing my list of favourite hockey players.  With another solid year thus far, it is fair to say that the young man is among my top 5 favourite players in the league.  Here will be my favourite Shark once Patty Marleau retires in the coming years.  It was great to see him representing San Jose at the All-Star game and I think the next Jersey that I get will have to his name on the back.  Keep up the great work, kid!

For the first time in over 3 years, I will get to see my beloved San Jose Sharks live in action.  And for the first time ever, I will get to watch a NHL game that doesn’t have the bloody Toronto Maple Leafs.  As much as I love Jordan Eberle and the young Oilers since moving to Edmonton, I have not stop cheering for my Sharks and will be donning my Teal at Rexall tonight as I support my team, the Sharks! Go Sharks Go!

Both of my hockey teams are struggling, but the Sharks need this win more.  The Oilers have been a pleasant surprise this year, competing in almost every game.  The Sharks have been struggling lately and haven’t been playing to their abilities.  The offense is struggling, the PK is struggling, the Power Play is struggling, but there’s still a lot of hockey left to play.  So, here’s hoping they can turn it around and build on the momentum from the comeback win against the Avs on Thursday.

I, like many other Sharks fan, was pumped when I heard the news that San Jose had signed Antti Niemi in the off season.  Throughout the Sharks’ history, two things always seem to go wrong: 1) Joe Thornton and co. disappear when the games get tough; and 2) Nabokov (or other goalies before him) got outplayed by the opposite goalie.  So, I was excited to see Doug Wilson try to solve one of his two problems by bringing in the goalie that just won the Stanley Cup and beat the Sharks in the process.
However, let’s face it, it didn’t start off too well in San Jose for Niemi.  He struggled to win games; he let in bad goals.  He was fighting the puck and he was losing the starting goalie role as Niittymaki stole the show in the early part of the season.  This gave Niemi some to time to work on his game, so that when Niittymaki went down with an injury, Niemi stepped in and after some shaky games has led the Sharks to a 9-0-1 record in their past 10 games.  He recorded back to back shutouts on the road in Boston and Washington.  His save percentage has been over .950 in the past few games and more importantly he is playing like the Stanley Cup Champion that he is.  The Sharks were down in the dumps just a month ago, but now with Niemi stonewalling oppositions, they have climbed up the Western Conference standings and are now tied with Dallas for the Pacific Division lead.
It doesn’t matter what happens now; where the Sharks finished (they should make it into the playoffs if they keep up the good work).  What matters now, is whether they will finally shake off the title of the great underachievers in the NHL playoffs.  With a Stanley Cup winning goalie and a sniper rookie, they might have their best chance yet.  Can’t wait to see how this all plays out.

Well, it looks like my original pick for the Calder (Jordan Eberle) isn’t going to win it since he decided to get himself injured for the first time in his hockey career and miss more than a month so far.
So, as the NHL resumes for the second half of the season, I want to throw my support to the young man who is single-handily keeping the San Jose Sharks’ playoffs hopes alive: Logan Couture.  I didn’t realize he was a rookie considering he has played some games for the Sharks last year, both in the regular season and the playoffs.  He did a solid job then, but this year he has taken his game to a whole new level with 22 goals in 49 games, including a mind-blowing 6 game winners!
Well, I know that the favourite is Skinner, who became the youngest All-Star ever this past weekend and is a good Canadian boy, I gotta go with my personal bias of my favourite team.  Logan has been having one hell of a season and I hope he continues to light the lamp through until the end of what has been a disappointing season for San Jose.

HP Pavilion, better known as the Shark Tank, is definitely on my list of places to go in the not too distant future.  Even though my beloved Sharks are struggling this year, I still need to see them play at their home arena.  Ideally, I would like to get down there soon while my favourites (Marleau, Thornton, Boyle, Pavelski, etc.) are still there.  I have heard stories that it can be one of the loudest buildings in the league and want to experience that.

Onto the Conference Finals for only the second time in franchise history.  The Sharks have actually been playing their best hockey in April and May, which is very nice to see.  It’s actually nice to see them actually play hockey in May.  It is equally nice to see them destroy (with the exception of game 4) the hated Wings.  The Big 3 showed why Team Canada chose them for the Olympics after Little Joe and co. carried the team in the first round.  The Sharks have had a complete team effort with the sharing the offensive load, with Nabby standing on his head (again with the exception of game 4), and the shut down defensive plays by all of the d-men and the forwards back-checking. Now, they still have a long ways to go and can’t just celebrate making it to the Conference Finals.  They still need to get through Chicago or Vancouver (although it looks like Chicago at the moment, unless Luongo becomes Halak over the next 3 games).  But the confidence in the team from the fans and players alike has been rising ever since game 4 of the first round and the fact that the team has won 7 out of their last 8 games.  No matter what happens in the next rounds, the organization has taken a huge step forward.
