I, like many other Sharks fan, was pumped when I heard the news that San Jose had signed Antti Niemi in the off season. Throughout the Sharks’ history, two things always seem to go wrong: 1) Joe Thornton and co. disappear when the games get tough; and 2) Nabokov (or other goalies before him) got outplayed by the opposite goalie. So, I was excited to see Doug Wilson try to solve one of his two problems by bringing in the goalie that just won the Stanley Cup and beat the Sharks in the process.
However, let’s face it, it didn’t start off too well in San Jose for Niemi. He struggled to win games; he let in bad goals. He was fighting the puck and he was losing the starting goalie role as Niittymaki stole the show in the early part of the season. This gave Niemi some to time to work on his game, so that when Niittymaki went down with an injury, Niemi stepped in and after some shaky games has led the Sharks to a 9-0-1 record in their past 10 games. He recorded back to back shutouts on the road in Boston and Washington. His save percentage has been over .950 in the past few games and more importantly he is playing like the Stanley Cup Champion that he is. The Sharks were down in the dumps just a month ago, but now with Niemi stonewalling oppositions, they have climbed up the Western Conference standings and are now tied with Dallas for the Pacific Division lead.
It doesn’t matter what happens now; where the Sharks finished (they should make it into the playoffs if they keep up the good work). What matters now, is whether they will finally shake off the title of the great underachievers in the NHL playoffs. With a Stanley Cup winning goalie and a sniper rookie, they might have their best chance yet. Can’t wait to see how this all plays out.
