On this date, 95 years ago, Canadian soldiers led an impressive attack on the Germans and over the next four days they took over the previously unattainable Vimy Ridge that the Germans had held since the beginning of the war. A lot has been written about this memorable moment in Canadian History. Some people say it was here that Canada broke away from the British Empire and became her own country. The Canadians broke through where the British and French could not and proved them as a force to be reckoned with. Others point out that a vast majority of the soldiers were of British descent and the Conscription Crisis split the country, especially in Quebec, where French-Canadians were opposed to Canada’s involvement in the war. Regardless of what side you are, the attack on Vimy Ridge by the Canadians was a genius military strategy that changed military strategies since that included more planning and getting more intelligence before sending your troops out into the thick of it. It also proved to the world that Canada has and continues to produce some of the best soldiers in the world. Lest we forget!
